Gary Vaynerchuk Interview: “Stop Watching and Go Hustle!”

Post Pic

Find your passion…check. Define your niche…check. Work your face off…check. Completely revolutionize the way this world looks at wine…if you are Gary Vaynerchuk, that is a big time check! Going from working in a liquor store earning $27,000 a year to building a $150 million wine empire with thousands of raving fans, I can comfortably say Gary is definitely “changing the wine world.” I recently had the chance to conduct a video interview with Gary, and truthfully, you have never met anyone like him.

The most fascinating part is that he is teaching entrepreneurs and companies to wake up to his all too simple business plan. His formula for success? Hustle, passion, patience and a whole lot of caring.

“I’m bringing it all the time. It’s just how I’m built. I’m Raw.”

Gary is not your typical entrepreneur. While some rise in the morning to participate in their morning activities and rituals to prepare them for the day, Gary is answering emails within minutes of being awake. And he doesn’t recommend it to everyone. You have to be specifically designed for the lifestyle that Gary has chosen.

“Doing the right thing and doing the nice thing is never the wrong thing.”

Many people reach out to Gary because he makes himself so accessible. He makes it his priority to respond back to the thousands of emails he get’s daily. Although I don’t drink much wine, his contagious personality drew me into the Vayniac club. After following Gary for many months seeing his rise to fame, I knew that when the time was right, I would reach out to him. Gary doesn’t put too much thought behind the people he connects with.  Some will may continue to support him and some won’t, so Gary just keeps serving people because in his mind, that’s what he believes is right. Doing the right thing will always, always, always move you closer to where you want to be whether you think so or not.

“Money is not what I’m about. Screw money. I’m about the grind…”

gary v Gary Vaynerchuk Interview: “Stop Watching and Go Hustle!”

Of course, that is because Gary has it, right? The truth of the matter is that Gary doesn’t care about flashy cars, first class flights or buying flat screens. As long as his family is healthy and he is moving closer to his goal of owning the New York Jets, he is happy. It’s all about the journey.

“Fame and opportunity only accentuates who you are. I am only going to become nicer because people are going to respect my caring.”

My first experience with Gary was when a friend told me to check out his online show Wine Library TV. Immediately I knew there was something special about Gary. I was thinking this guy was off the wall…and he was the kind of guy I could relate with. He was talking about how this wine tasted like sweat socks and cigars mixed with a bit of cherries. Then, I stumbled across his legendary talk at the Web 2.0 Expo which completely blew me away. And then Conan. I had never seen a businessman so real, so authentic and willing to tell it like it is.

“Stop watching this and go hustle.”

Gary’s advice to the many young entrepreneurs who will be watching this interview is pretty straight forward. I have seen “experienced” business owners challenge his philosophy, arguing that success is not that easy. Well, let me take a stab at what Gary is communicating with the world. When you have passion for something, are willing to work harder than anyone else on the block, are willing to wait as long as it takes, and you truly care about the people involved in the process, all the other pieces will take care of themselves.

Am I saying forget reading books and just hustle everyday? Of course not. Your ruthless hustle will in fact lead you to many of the resources you need to move you closer to where you want to be. If you are still struggling with solidifying where you want to be, give Gary “a whirl” and enjoy the interview!

  • This is an amazing and inspiring interview. You both have the same level of intensity which is very apparent and is keeping me on the edge of my chair. My favorite part of this is that it isn't a conventional and boring interview, you are getting personal and to the point. I want to see more of these!

    Keep it up!
  • Thank you Trace. Gary is the real deal. We will keep that feel as this blog continues to grow. More coming your way brother!
  • prosperitygal
Bradley I love you ability to weave into the flow of conversations and influence them to assist others in making their dreams come true.

Thanks for being such a great friend. Gary will always have a special place in my heart as he gave my an interview early on in my radio show and helped put me on the map-CRUSHIT!
  • Thank you Michelle. I try to ask the questions that people want to know. Or the stuff that they don't know they want to know, but they really need to know. Gary is exactly what this online world needed. Many love him, some don't. At the end of the day he knows what he is in the game for and his intentions are pure.

We are now Crushing It together girl!
  • amyjewell
You are just so cool, Bradley! Lovin it!
  • I'm too sexy for my shirt. Thank you Amy :)
  • Way to go Brad, @GaryVee is at the top of the social media food chain. Great interview!
  • And you would think at the top your head would get bigger and bigger and you know what...he was truly one genuine dude as you can see in the interview. I was hoping I could really capture that.

“Fame and opportunity only accentuates who you are. I am only going to become nicer because people are going to respect my caring.”

    Thanks for the comment Billy.
  • phflowers
Great Interview. I was inspired partway through to Stop Watching and Get back to Hustling. . . nevertheless, I had to come back and finish watching. Great Job to Both of you gentlemen as I wish you only the best in your journeys towards success.
  • Hey, now your talking Gary's language. I found it so interesting that he does not read books and he learns all internally. It is an interesting concept. What do you think about that?
  • phflowers
Absolutely Amazing. From time to time I've felt that way in that I know I can do things without having to hear it from another. I guess that is a part of our programming to believe that we must get ALL of our information from external sources and not rely on our internal instincts to go out and DO.

Gary has taken that internal instinct and put it into overdrive. His accomplishments are to be outpaced only by himself as he is definitely on the path to owning those Jets.

On the contrary, If one refuses to take in the knowledge of others, that, too can be seen as a negative. But Hey, If it Works, Do it... I'll Continue reading to expand my knowledge base and increase my vocabulary. I'll also add Gary's book to the list, if you do so see fit ;-).

    Hasta Luego.
  • Good job. I feel Gary V. He goes against the grain of the norm and I'm just feeling that!
  • We gotta do us right and not over think it. I love social media because it is like a mirror. I reflects back who we really are. It has helped me embrace my authentic self to the fullest. No compromise! Thanks for the comment Trevor.
  • Gary's response on balance was an interesting one. I am sure everyone reading has struggled with balance. The best advice I ever received on the subject was "Always, Always put family first". I try to live by this, but there is something to be said for (as Gary puts it) "Striking while the iron is hot". I think for entrepreneurs balance is more of a long term objective. The trick is remembering the score.
  • As my friend Carlos Marin always says... "In the choice between love and money, I choose both and in massive amounts." Their does not have to be a trade off. I do find it many times a difficult balance like everyone else. At the end of the day, my family is what I do it for. I would love to incorporate them more into my business. Any suggestions?
  • Now that is a great question. The first thing that comes to mind, and something my wife and I are going through as we speak. For us, it all boils down to finding a common interest. My blog, my company, and my day job keep me busy. While my wife has been struggling to find a career that she is passionate about. You can imagine the struggle for balance.

The minute I finished Crush It! I passed it on to her, she realized that she loves three things frugal fashion, handmade jewelery, and writing. Now if that is not all the proper ingredients for a good blog I don't know what is. I worked with her, as I would in a consultant role, to help her define here goals. The common interest is not the fashion or the jewelery, but it is the writing. It is finding communities online (like this one), engaging with them, and growing as a person, by sharing experiences.

This, of course, is strictly dependent on the willingness, interest, and goals of the family members involved. Young family would possibly make for a better interview or blog topic (perhaps by enforcing a "fun Friday" type post or similar) to your blog.

Any of this make sense/ help?

    PS- Great Interview.
  • Great Interview guys! My favorite line is from gary: "I wish that there was a sexier answer." -- wow!
  • But there's not. :) He's a straight shooter. That's why so many people like his style. Thanks you Andrea!
  • Love the energy and "it's all about the passion" interview!
    God stuff bro!

This blog is going to be HUGE.

Like Mashable meets Entrepreneur magazine BIG.

    Keep rockin bro

    Dbk
  • I gotta quote you on this...You said it better than me!

"Like Mashable meets Entrepreneur magazine BIG." -DBK

We are going to bring it hard. I hear you are a pretty decent writer ;) *cough*cough*

    Thanks dbk!
  • Karen
The thing that oozes from you both is goodness, sharing and passion.
You are both wonderful exciting human beings.
    Love this casual interview, K
  • Thank you Karen. We just kept it real because we know thats what you like ;) And that's all Gary knows how to do.
  • Bradley, first of all, congrats on launching Unstrappd.com, lookin' really good!
Enjoyed the interview with Gary V. Loved the energy and I love how Gary always speaks from the heart! Truly a passionate individual!

Lookin' forward to keeping updated and working with you on some Gen Y stuff!

    Talk soon.

    -Adam
  • Adam-

Thank you very much my friend. I look up to you and what you do. This blog means a great deal to me and I am pumped you like it because I want to collaborate with you in some form. We are all in it for the same reason. Did you see your link in the sidebar??? ;)
  • patriciahudak
    Great interview!

I love the fact that even though Gary is promoting a book, he so open to having an interview that focuses on helping young entrepreneurs succeed.

I think his advice is vital for any young entrepreneur looking to make it big. You just have to continue to hustle! (Great advice to anyone who is trying to make it big in any field!)
  • Thank you Patricia.

He is a very giving dude. I am glad you enjoyed the interview. The message can help anyone for that matter, but it's how we tell the story right? I really look forward to seeing some of your work and how we can join in this mission together :) Thanks again.
  • Facebook User
Wow, great interview Bradley. Read Gary's book and it is awesome. Getting it for all of my employees!
  • tali420
This is awesome! I never knew some of the most easiest things to do were right in front of me! Thanks, you guys rock :)
  • mikemonty
Gary Vee's an awesome guy; I remember watching his interview with Andrew Warner awhile back on mixergy and loved what he had to say. I enjoy the fact that he pushes the line socially without actually pushing the line, because it seems like to him there is no line. I hope some really awesome people get those books and that you keep one for yourself Brad! Excellent interview! :)
  • The line with Gary is just keeping it real and staying true to himself. It is like when I asked him about being humble. He says he put's no thought into whether he fly's business or coach. He just does it. Even meeting him tonight. He is not into the flashy stuff. Regardless, he is someone you should put on your radar to meet MM. Your are a serious talent about to be unleashed. I don't have to tell you to don't ever stop. ;) Thanks for the comment. Should we get the "strapps" going and run a giveaway???
  • Darius Askaripour
Incredible. I just finished Crush It and Gary's insight has changed my life. Awesome job Bradley.
  • Great video Brad...It was "off the hook" Gary is as real as it gets and you did a spectacular job interviewing him. Loved it!!!! Keep them coming. What a way to kick off your blog!!
  • GREAT inteview Bradley ~ I am reminded that all the years that I blazed a trail I never really thought too much about mentors....I also learned by doing ~ Its food for thought here, in regard to wanting to mentor others to success.....but the bottom line is the hustle, and although I do want to see others succeed....as there is so much to be learned from significant personal accomplishment....I recognize its as important to hustle now more than ever ~ Thanks for the "view" ~ Inspired

You are spot on. There is nothing better than for you to go out there and just become ridiculously, massively successful. Your results are going to be an incredible teacher. Hard work is the big player here. It has been great to get to know you over the past few months. You have a genuine soul. Look forward on what's to come. Please come back every day ;)
  • Great interview Bradley!
  • Thank you Dan. Really appreciate the comment. Would love to talk about teaming up on some of this stuff.
  • Ezekiel11
Brad thanks for the heads-up on the interview, I'm in your Camp when it comes to his style of biz and appreciation for others..."Wired to Appreciate" and "Take Nothing for Granted" I can completely relate to.
    Talk to you soon, Aloha...
  • I am glad you enjoyed it. Just a lack general love for ourselves keeps us from loving other people. Allows us to appreciate so much more. Thank you for your feedback.
  • Tammay
Awesome Gary! First time I've heard of you. I feel your spirit in this video.
  • He's got a new fan. Hope you enjoyed it :)
  • iandavidchapman
    Hi Brad,
Enjoyed the interview, I'm also a big Fan of Gary Vaynerchuck, you guys had a great chemistry together. Your convergence theme looks really slick too.
  • Ian-

Thank you for both complements. Gary is a really easy going guy. He is exactly as he appears every day in social media. The theme we put alot of effort into. I am super pumped that you like it. This site will be reaching millions of young entrepreneurs very soon. Ciao Ian!
  • Great interview... You're into raw food dude? We should talk -- we may have a lot of things in common. Peace,

  • Great Interview! I grind everyday!

  • kevinhudoba
Gary is a great guy. Definitely someone to watch and learn from.
  • Great stuff Bradley, totally diggin the interview. I'm absolutely gonna have to check out Gary's book, been followin him for a few years now...you seem to be takin after him, keep hustlin dude!! ;-)
  • A great book. If you have been following him for that long, you know he is not short on content. I'd definitely scoop it up. Thanks for the comment!
  • Great interview. I never heard of WLTV and I had to go check out an episode.
Very interesting and entertaining guy. Back to the interview though, one of the
best compliments I can give an interview is when you watch it without paying
attention to the time bar. I had no idea it was about to be over until you said
last question and that's a great thing cause if I'm checking constantly to see
how long I have to go, I'm normally watching something boring. So once again
great job, I will definitely keep an eye out for Gary and will probably want to read
that book as well as his approach is very different and intriguing.
  • Wow dude that was an incredible compliment and I am humbled. I feel the same way about much of the stuff on the internet. I try to produce what I want to hear. Nothing less. I hold myself to a high standard and it means a great deal that you took some value for this video.

His approach is so different, yet it is soooo simple. Almost too simple. Thanks why some people are scared of it. Why over complicate things, right? Come back daily bro!
  • tonyfinbarrsmith
Excellent article and video interview my man! Gary is the king of killing it. There's no doubting this man's sickening work ethic!
thanks for the great video, I'm off for a mooch around the site, to see what else piques my interest...
    laters!
  • Thank you Tony. Gary is on fire or "hitting his sweet spot" as I like to call it. Enjoy the site, I hope we can live up to your expectations! Big time content coming everyday.
  • "Stop watching this and hustle" - - gotta love Gary! Good questions Brad, I've seen so many interviews with Gary and all the Q&A he does after his keynotes, it must have been difficult coming up with so many quality questions. Gary's message that consistent, hard work trumps talent alone is something I think all of us aspiring and young entrepreneurs need to take to heart.

As for some feedback, I think I'd be interested in seeing a situational interview with Gary. A series of questions around a theoretical business idea and how he would build it into a $100MM success. Have questions pitting him in the midst of the stressful start-up stage, later trying to garner VC funding, struggling to stay focused, tips for being productive when the theoretical business has kept him up for weeks on end, etc. Something completely off the wall that lets us see the way his entrepreneurial mindset works on the fly and the way he approaches business development.

Solid interview! Love Gary, he's a hero of mine and I hope to meet him one day as you have. Good luck with his event!
  • Hard work does trump talent. We also have to be honest with ourselves and look at the BRUTAL FACTS in our life. Some people are just not cut out for it and some people just flat out suck at certain things. And that is okay. We need to look at what we can be the best in the world at.

Ex- I love your idea about the business situations. We should put some of that into play.

I appreciate the positive remarks man. It was great meeting you in person at CEO and you definitely lived up to the hype I heard about you. Keep rocking EX!
  • Bradley -

Awesome job my friend! I know how BIG this was for you and I think you have lived up to the opportunity to bring Gary Vee to your readers and viewers. A couple of suprises in this interview ... a couple of things I haven't heard Gary say before.

    I recommend viewing this video!

    James
  • Hey James,

You know the first time I ever had a chance to speak with Gary was on your radio show. Remember that? Months back. I have been following him for a long time and really taken to heart the things he has taught me. I appreciate all you do and the complement. What was the biggest surprise?
  • chris mcdaniel
    great interview brad!
  • BeLimitlessNow
Bradley, That was an absolutely phenomenal interview. Gary is one of the most genuine entrepreneurs out in the filed, teaching all of us how to go out there and absolutely crust it! Awesome content being shared here, and looking forward to more Un'strapped interviews and productions!
  • Arthur-

It rocks my world that you liked the interview. I will be giving it everything to bring you the best possible content to help grow your business. Thank you for being part of the Unstrapp'd community.

    all ya'll !

Hey Brad - NICE HUSTLE DUDE ! ! You did great ! Just found you today.....through my new discovery of, and resonance with, Gary Vee. I'm friends on FB with Marshal Wayne - - that's how I found you. Can't wait to check out your site more and hopefully get to know you better !

If you email me, I have a great "hook up" for you on raw food, and I also love Pitbulls, I love Airedales even more, but I love Pitbulls too for sure ! I'm a HUGE terrier fan.

  • tamcdonald
Brad, nice job and some interesting questions. My biggest take away was just be the real you. And hustle. Loved Gary's comment toward the end about stop watching and get out and hustle! Chicago on Thursday!
  • Hey dude, where were you tonight??? I appreciate the kind words. That was a great take away. I realized how genuine he really is. He just cares and is willing to work harder than you, me and anyone he knows. That mixed with passion is what gets you to the top. Hope you enjoy the site and to see you at the Chicago Underground Social Media Society event.
  • Nice job, great questions. This guy has passion and hustle. Saw him first on NWMPro and was hooked. Gary has contagious energy.
  • Brad, You are pretty cool too.... ;-)
  • :) thanks Mike
  • Amazing Interview! Thank you for doing this. Arthur Turned me on to you and I am excited to connect!
  • I thought the interview was great, and this was my first time at Unstrapp’d - a site dedicated to a concept I feel is largely underutilized by entrepreneurs.
  • Dude, isn't it crazy how I met your mom at a networking event and she was going off on how talented her son was and hes a young entrepreneur and now we are connected. This shit is so cool and this is why I love social media. Chris I hope you love the site and become more part of this community. Thanks for taking the time to leave me a comment!
  • julie ziemelis
I am a HUGE Gary V fan! I love his book, his videos, his energy, his message! THanks for bringing the interview to the masses!
  • Really, it is my pleasure. Thanks for the comment and please come back every day!
  • Jperry3
Great interview Bradley, he is inspiring to every young entrepreneur in a different but interesting viewpoint!
  • Thank you Jace. I do believe so too. He makes his message so simple while many try to complicate the message and say it's not that easy. Really it is. The hardest thing is defining your passion. Thant comes with taking a look at who we really are. I appreciate the comment man. Come back daily!
  • Thank you so much Bradley and Gary! I absolutely love the "tunnels" idea and can't wait for that book. There are often so many different ways to prosper from businesses that we often overlook and I can't wait to get a further explanation on making more from existing business.

    You're both awesome, great interview!
    Chris Hughes
  • The "Tunnels" and I also really resonate with his "Contradictions" concept. Like, I am the most powerful person alive and at the same time I am no one. This is how I feel about myself all the time and Gary spelled it out best. I actually told Gary about this site in the interview and he said in his honest opinion it would be huge. Only time can tell ;) Thanks for the comment Chris. You are rocking it brother!
  • This site IS going to be huge. Great content always brings fans so just keep that up and I'm sure it'll only keep getting bigger and bigger!
  • Bradley, Very insightful interview. Great job digging in and helping us learn more about Gary V the man and what makes him tick instead of just learning more about Gary V message. There's a lot to learn in both pieces.

    Doug
  • Hey Doug,

I am just happy that you enjoyed it dude. I really just wanted to find the things that people really want to know but they aren't thinking about asking. My biggest takeaway was to work harder than anyone you know. And care. Really really care. Thanks for the comment. Hope we can win you over to come back everyday!
  • Bradley,

You have won me over to come back. What I learned is what I already expected. Gary V is a true entrepreneur. For true entrepreneurs it's not about ego or the stuff you can accumulate. True entrepreneurs relish the "work" as much as the achieving.

If you get a chance interview Mike Michalowicz, the" Toilet Paper Entrepreneur." He is another true entrepreneur.

    Doug
  • This was an inspirational video. I encourage all entrepreneurs to watch it and take notes! The idea that having a successful business is not just about regulations and rules is such a key point that needs to be stressed. Success is about being real and Brad and Gary are living proof of this. Thanks guys!
  • You really just said it right there. There is no set way to build a business. Anyone can get a free blog and a flip cam and start their first business working at the car wash while living at home with mom. As long as their main focus is about the content, they are going to win. It is really pretty simple. Enjoy yourself and you message and do it with authority. Work harder than anyone you know and don't us go in with intentions to monetize. That should be furthest from our minds. I have a looooong way to take this, but together we can reach millions. Thanks for the thoughtful comment Vanessa ;)
  • justinburns
Luv it man, whats going on.b will great interview.
  • Thanks Justin and for supporting the contest and Unstrapp'd. I hope you had fun meeting @GaryVee tonight. I know I did. You are a rock star man and I am glad to know you :)
  • Bradley, I posted a link to this video on my social media profile because you and GaryVee rocked it! Keep up the good work my friend and I look forward to watching your social media rise!!!
  • Thank you for the complement and for your support spreading the message Chris!
  • Great interview! Definitely thoughtful questions that get to the passion of entrepreneurship, developing a business, etc. I haven't read the book yet, but its definitely on the list of books to read!
  • Fabulous! Thank you for sharing...Gary Vaynerchuck rocks. He is inspiring...an original...I've been in the business world about as long as he's been alive. His new ideas, energy and fresh outlook combined with his basic beliefs and character is unstoppable! He WILL own the Jets someday...I have no doubt!
  • I think this is a killer interview. Admittedly, before this I wasn't to familiar with Gary or what he is all about. I have to say, that seeing someone who is so incredibly raw and in your face is refreshing. The aspect I love most is his commitment to the process versus the result. Brad, you really are an inspiration on your own man. Thanks for putting yourself out there and creating a space where young entrepreneurs like myself can continue to learn and grow from people like Gary. Keep rockin' brotha!
  • Zach,

Gary is setting the bar for entrepreneurs and big businesses around the globe. I appreciate the kind comments Zach. You are quite impressive yourself. I hope to keep delivering to your standard. Talk soon. Cheers!
  • drbenlo
Great questions and interview, Bradley! Loved Gary's response early on, "I'm wired to appreciate" - referencing your "fake it" post, this is one example of a great habit to cultivate. Another one, "I'm about the challenge & the game." "I don't need stuff. I need my family, and the game...and the Jets." :)
  • Hey Dr. Ben,

I have realized that more and more over the past year that I really don't care about stuff. Like before its was pretty important to have a nice car and nice things, and at this point, it is the least of my worries. Not to say that I wont have nice thing...whether I do or don't, it ain't going to cause me to lose sleep. What has your experience been like with this concept?
  • Nice work, Brad! Gary Vee is pretty awesome. I love how raw he is. He definitely is gifted with business intuition. In the same respect, I'm excited to see you climb. You're really making it happen! Good for you my friend :)
  • The best part of Gary is that he is always willing to spare time for his audience. He is the S@#$ !
  • @2:45 seconds. "Nothing is more honorable than a grateful heart." - Seneca

Completely agree with the bit on being thankful.
  • Nice Interview! Great way to start 2010!!
  • Thanks John! Hope you are crushing it in 2010
  • You know what Gary, that fact that you can get up every morning and drop a deuce says a lot about your digestive health. Way to eat your veggies buddy, you're killing it. Excellent interview Bradley, you guys Crushed It. Word.
