How Changing 4 Words Made Me 5 Figures

There are four words in the English language, that when structured in the correct order, could be one of the biggest limiting beliefs for an entrepreneur.   When I hear someone say these words, I sometimes cringe because I can tell opportunities just blow this person by.  These four words form the saying, “I can’t afford it.”

I must preface by saying, it is not your fault if you were taught to use these atrocious words.  They stem from your financial blueprint.  We are financial hard-wired at an early age with the talks about money at the dinner table or times at the grocery store when mom declares having to buy the canned vegetables over the fresh because it is too expensive to eat healthy.  If you are looking for advice, your parents may not be your best choice as financial planners.

Hitting Rock Bottom

I used to say this quite often until I had an extremely valuable wake up call.  I was at the bottom of the bottom in my business.  My resources were almost completely burnt out.  Having $25 in my bank account, I placed a call to my then business partner out of desperation and asked him to borrow $1,000, which he didn’t even have.

I was to the point where I could not think of a way around me having to get a job.  Let me remind you at this point, I have been an entrepreneur for a year and a half.  I had some pretty successful months in the past twelve and everyone knew it.  Fortunately, I made some not so wise decisions with my money.  And I say fortunately because I learned some extremely valuable lessons.

Can I Have My $2,000 Back?

I realized I had prepaid $2,000 for one month’s worth of coaching with a successful business coach.  As the humiliation continued, I thought my only option would be to ask him for my money back since I had never used or even scheduled the coaching.  So I gave him a ring thinking surely he would understand.  After getting straight to the point with him and telling him I need my money back, he said “Bradley, do you know how many people in the history of my business have asked for their money back?”  I replied, “not to many.”  He quickly snaps back with a “ZERO!”

Boy was I feeling like an idiot at this point.  And I am sure he was stretching the truth a bit, but with bills already late and money owed, I really didn’t care.  I needed this money.  So he insisted that I use this coaching and I insisted I couldn’t afford it and I need my money back.  And at this very moment, what he said to me changed my life forever.

“You can’t afford it?  Bradley, you can’t afford NOT to use this coaching.  Your backwards thinking got you to where you are in life right now.  Do you think something is just automatically going to change in the way you think and you will become successful?  You need to borrow someone’s thinking to help you reprogram the way you think or you will be stuck this way the rest of your life.  Is that what you want?” he asked me.

A Big Blow To The Ego

I was completely floored.  Mixed emotions were racing through my head.  No one has ever talked to me in that fashion ever before.  It was like a gun was put to the head of this limiting belief I had about money.  I couldn’t believe I have been saying “I can’t afford it” my entire life which may have led me to pass on many opportunities.

At this point, I am thinking I really had nothing to lose.  My dignity was more important than the $2,000.  And what is the worst that can happen.  Are they going to repossess my Mercedes if I don’t pay the bill?  Big deal.  It’s not like I even had money to pay for the premium gas.  So, I took a leap of faith.

I had 4×45 minute phone coaching sessions with my new coach.  He admitted he does not know how much we can accomplish in this time period, as he usually does not work with people for under a three-month period.  I was determined to have a breakthrough.  We dove into it and right away came up with a plan.  The only problem that I was that at the time, I was selling entrepreneurial education and my company I was contracted for just released a new product.  After being in business for over a year I realized I had no clue on what it meant to be an entrepreneur and that I was the one who needed it most.  How could I sell something I did not own?

How Can I Afford It?

Again I couldn’t help my self with an “I can’t afford it.”  This is where I was taught to restructure my wording on this limiting belief.  He said to restructure my words and instead ask myself “how can I afford it?” What resources could I tap into at this point?  I had to come up with $3,500 for this training, which seemed like climbing Everest.

The only place I knew I could turn was my Dad.  Although he didn’t have the money to lend me, he leveraged his credit card, which I am forever thankful for and kept me in the game.  With my coaches plan, I knew exactly how much I needed to make and had a blueprint on what I would have to do on a daily basis.  What was interesting is that I was going to cut my working time in half and make more money doing so by being more productive with my time.

The Happy Ending

Well long story short, the following month I made $2,100 in profit.  The month after that I made $3,800 and just over three months after those four coaching sessions, I cashed in a $20,225 month.  And I hope you are absolutely not impressed by those numbers.  But, it goes to show how a little shift in thinking can have a profound effect on your life.  What I am most proud of, was the fact that at this very moment is when I decided to get out the game and follow my true passion to empower other young entrepreneurs to realize their inner greatness.

But, I couldn’t afford it right?  If you truly want something in life, cost will never hold you back.  Because your costs of regret from not doing something will outweigh the price you have to pay.  If you ever catch yourself saying “I can’t afford it”, ask yourself “how can I afford it” and watch your whole perspective change.

    Hey Bradley,
What a great blog post and better yet story. I'm glad you figured this out as early in your life as you have. Some of us it takes a while to figure this out.
  • I couldn't agree more!

I once had a similar attitude about some PSI Seminars witch were essentially life coaching seminars, in the end, years later, I am glad went and I did get my moneys worth! - rayrenk.org
  • Oh my word, I just realized I've been pathetic most of my life... How many times did opportunity slip away because I couldnt afford it?? And its such a small shift in one's thinking to make...

Thanks for the wake up call.
    Definitely worth a re-tweet
  • Positive thinking attracts positive things. Also your necessity to earn money drove you to make it. Necessity is the biggest motivator on the planet.

Great post, well worth a re-tweet

It was an absolute honor and I would be no where if it were not for all of you guys. Tell everyone I said that ;) Please come back and I hope to win you over as a daily reader!

Brad: We have such a similar story. You are truly snowballing my friend. Your words are genuine and I know that you know in your heart no matter what you will never let anyone or anything get in the way of your goals and dreams. Now is the time to set your sights high and go for it!
  • Hey Bradley...EXCELLENT post! We're video blogging from the minivan on the way to Whistler right now. You've inspired us to do a video about those 4 dreaded words "I Can't Afford It" - http://bit.ly/QKCTq

Thanks Brad...LOVE the new blog!! ~Sue
  • Good read Bradley I should take some inspiration from you..........
  • This is an extremely inspiring post! Since I myself don't make a ton of cash I can completely relate to this story. You should never be afraid to go after what you want - no matter what. If you don't ask, you won't get an answer.
  • YET. You don't make a ton of cash, yet. Napoleon Hill said something like "When riches come, they come with such great force you will wonder where they were hiding your entire life." I may of butchered that but it is true. Much of the income in my business came out of left field. If you set yourself up in opportunities that allow you to make the income that you desire to make, then all you have to do is put in the work to get there. Thanks for the comment Corey. I check out your blog. Very cool! Please keep coming back!!!
  • Hey Bradley! I always enjoy these types of posts from you. One thing that is hammered into our heads is that we shouldn't be the CEO's of our own companies because we are not "qualified". So I've always thought of a business coach as an extremely cheap CEO.

Anyway, I think you should write a post about exactly what you are doing as an entrepreneur. I tell my friends that I'm writing for you and your site, but I don't know what to tell them when they ask what you do... Except for the fact that you're a social media afficionado and have a passion for young entrepreneurs. Plus, I would love to know how you make money!
  • Thank you Nick. I am glad to have you as a writer for this blog. You bring a unique perspective that many can learn from. I will take you advice. I do get many questions about that so I think I will put something together into a upcoming post.
  • Awesome post for a Saturday night! You can never go wrong with spending money on developing your skills.
  • I think I have spent an average of $10,000 per year on education since leaving college. Not that it is necessary for a young entrepreneur. I don't think it s necessary to spend like that, especially since this is the information age. We can practically get an equivalent to an MBA just from reading blogs. I don't know what I would do without my books though. Thanks for the comment. Where do you find your inspiration Justin?
  • Mostly I can take it from real life experiences, but I also read a lot. Books and blogs just like this are a great help to learn new things for a very low cost!

Bradley I love your ability to take questions and use them for the power they offer. This is something that is very effective in helping my clients as well. It is fun to watch the results and how it changes all our lives when each of us steps into our power.
  • Thank you Michelle. Appreciate the comment ;)

    Great Post Bradley
I particularly enjoyed the realization that you had been saying "I can't afford it" all your life. Your post has made me think about how I too have had to change the way I think and the words I use. My favorite is using "My Pleasure" instead of "No Problem", it really sets a totally different tone and almost always puts a smile of the face of the giver and the receiver. My second fav is what you have used here, continually asking myself the question "How Can I..." So much more powerful and nets much better results!
  • And you were the one that called me out on my "no problem" habit. It is amazing how we can go our whole life without understanding the meaning behind the words we choose. But, we can all change with just a decision. Thanks for the comment Carla ;)

Show me a good team and I'll show you a good coach
  • You reminded me of one of my favorite clips of all time:

  • Bradley,

I remember reading about this in Robert Kiyosaki's book. After reading this over again in this post it really hit home with me. I've been hesitant to spend the only money I have on coaching and improving myself. I mean, I am a college student surrounded by people telling me how they can't afford to do this and can't afford to do that. YET, they spend $40-$100 a weekend on getting drunk or buying drugs

I spend most of the money that I have and make on food and have been buying as many business/personal development books as I can. I have been very hesitant about finding an actual coach to work with me to make sure I get to where I need to be at. I guess it was because I really just thought that I couldn't afford it, but in reality....I CAN'T AFFORD NOT TO.

I really love the question of "How can I afford this" and as entrepreneurs....we always find a way. Hell, if someone can make $1,000,000 in a day(Jeff Walker, http://www.sixinseven.com/) , who's to say that we can't make $2,000 in a month to pay for professional coaching?

I absolutely love UnStrappd. Keep it up Bradley, I'm always looking for more of your great info!
  • Chris,

On the coaching front, before you go sinking money into coaching, you should look at...
    1. Determine if that is the best way you learn. (remember Gary Vee says he learns best internally.
    2. Understand where you are going and why (it can be a big waste of money if not)
    3. If you can find a mentor who can teach you while you can make money

Professional coaches are most effective if you already have a goal and direction in mind. I would start out putting your finger on what challenges you are facing now. Usually a lack in discipline equates to a lack in direction. Because if we all knew where we were going, we would most likely know what we gotta get done to get there.

I appreciate your openness. It provides for good conversation. Thank you for sharing your voice with this community. I look forward to growing this to a whole new level. Can't do it with out you guys.
  • Killer post Bradley! Keep sharing the awesomeness dude. This one'll get ya thinkin'...
  • Thanks Mike. I will keep bringing it to your level ;) What would you like to see more of on Unstrapp'd?
  • You know, I don't exactly have a specific preference. Of course stick to your niche and keep rolling out content on that, but I think a lot of what to post should be up to the content creator.

    So far, so good ;-)
  • I don't know how many times I've read how not having enough money at start-up was one of the best things that could happen to a company...I just listened to a lecture on http://www.academicearth.org and the guy talked about how when making Monty Python, they couldn't afford horses, so they compromised by being innovative with some coconuts and the rest is history... I just had my credit line decreased, I was then I realized I was trying to develop my nutrition practice through my structure, my equipment, etc. Not having the funding made me realize and accept that I just needed to focus on serving my first clients well and then use my initial sales as funding - which I am now focusing on, underpromise and overdeliver. I have a friend who literally developed a chiropractic practice month by month..."this month we can buy a paper shredder" and so on and so forth. He's doing very well in a blue collar economy where many have lost their jobs. He doesn't need patients, patients need him.
  • hehe Monty Python is AWESOME. Innovation truly comes out when we are bootstrapping. arinehartdc if you need any help I'd love to brainstorm with you. I've been known to come up with a few ideas that might help you out :) -Chris
