Be Memorable: Get Your Name Seen Twice

One of the biggest problems most marketers find themselves facing is being seen and remembered. Being seen is the easy part, if you spam enough; of course you’re going to get seen! But what makes someone remember your name? Well being seen twice, on two different locations is probably one of the best things you can do, and trust me; it’s a lot harder achieving this than it sounds.

If another website has ever talked about you in the past, you will know how beneficial this is. This is something I have found very interesting during my ventures to find online marketing role models and friends in the marketing field. If you see someone’s name once, you may quickly forget about them and have almost no interest in finding out more information about them, but if you see them again, then often this can lead to you feeling curious and wanting to find out more about them.

Watch Your Idols

Just think about why your idols have become who they are.  The first time you heard about their name you probably didn’t think twice about them. The second time you remember them, and start thinking about them, maybe you even start researching about them and once you know about them, then BAM!  They will be stuck on your mind.  When you get people talking about you, you have the upper hand. One example for me is Seth Godin, obviously he is known by many people, but it doesn’t always start out this way. My brother actually told me about him at first, he told me about his book the Purple Cow. I heard him again on a blog I think, which got me interested about him, two days later, I’ve read his book and he’s one of my favorite marketers. He’s got consumer loyalty from me for until he stops writing.  Why? Because of a little word of mouth.

Be Seen Everywhere

Another example is Bradley Will himself. I first saw his JV partner Russell Yermal being the first commenter on a Tony Robbins interview. From here I followed him to his Facebook and somehow managed to end up on one of Russell’s and Bradley’s joint venture websites. That was the first time I even heard of Bradley, then seeing him again on Facebook, Twitter and then on Unstrapp’d, my curiosity grew more and more until finally I wanted to find out more about him, checking into his blog.

Comment Often

Obviously some sites arouse curiosity more than others.  For example, if I saw someone who in my mind was already positioned as a leader in a niche talk about someone, that third party credibility will peak my curiosity. On the other hand if I saw someone multiple times on Facebook and Twitter because of their spamming, I would probably just block them and remove them from my life.  Therefore it is important to be mentioned, and more importantly, to be mentioned in a positive way.

A Note from Bradley: The number one place to start getting noticed, would be commenting on other blogs.  Pick out several blogs you enjoy in your niche that have good readership.  Subscribe to them in your Google Reader so you know when the new posts are live.  Leave thoughtful and insightful comments and soon enough the owners of the blogs will notice you as well as the rest of the community.  With consistency and frequency, you name will be seen in front of many people in your niche and they will find it hard not to remember your name.

  • Great article Steve!

  • Quick question about your name being seen twice, do you think a blog should be called Problogger or Darren Rowse' Problogger? Should you feature your name in the blog name or not?

  • It really depends on what you are aiming to achieve. For example on my blog I am attempting to relate the knowledge to my name because I want to become more well known as an internet marketer. What other people do is wish to make the blog a business or a seperate source of income, an example of this occurring would be Unstrappd itself. By not adding his name in the title it becomes more of a social blog where others are more inclined to make posts etc, so again think about what you are trying to achieve before thinking if you want to feature your name in the title or not.

I think being seen is about breadth...being seen twice is about depth. When you focus on building relationships and kowpow in similar groups as those in a similar niche you increase your chances of being seen and recognized and valued for what you have to offer to that community. Social media is a bit of luck, but results come with consistency. Quality of conversations is better than quantity as Gary Vee reminds us in Crush It. You might only get a fraction of followers from a particular effort (ex/ blog comments) but those people from those sources might be more likely to like what you have to offer. Besides collaboration is so important in today's world...there's too much to know to be able to handle it all yourself. We need to find structure in the social dynamic...not the linear relationships/project development that we're used to.

  • Great article Steve. Very often we tend to overlook the very simple steps we need to take on a daily basis.

  • Thank you for your comment, it seems to me that it is one of the biggest reasons that most internet marketers fail. They start forgetting about the basics and therefore become less effective.
