Why Young Entrepreneurs Are Throwing Money Away By Not Having An Autoresponder

If there is one adage you will hear over and over again from today’s successful online entrepreneurs, it’s this: build an e-mail list! You will hear this drum beat so often because it holds the clear ring of truth.

Building an e-mail list has never been more critical to online success. Especially when considering the current economic climate, building a list provides you with a qualified target audience who already understands what you are offering and who have already agreed to either purchase or download something from you for in the past.

In short, an e-mail list gives you access to your prospect’s inbox: by far the easiest place to sell to an online customer.

Not only a silver bullet to help you get more buyers, an e-mail autoresponder is also an amazing bang for the buck with a bottom line cost of only pennies per person to reach everyone on your list.

There is, however, a right and a wrong way to build a list. Build a list with intelligence and you will be reaping the benefits for years to come, build it poorly and you will only be erecting walls around your progress.

Follow these tips to start and manage your email campaigns as effectively as possible.

1. Get permission first

E-mail is different from all other kinds of marketing. When you get junk mail at home, all those senders required was a working address. But when it comes to someone’s inbox, you need permission first, unless you want to be considered a spammer (you don’t!). In general, people do not open e-mail from people they don’t know. In addition, only opt in or permission-based e-mails are sure to get past the spam filters which seem to get stronger every day.

2. You have permission, now use it

When someone provides you with permission to e-mail them, send that first communication as quickly as possible. This is a terrific time to send them the free gift promised on your website, whether it is a free ebook or perhaps an email course. Don’t send a sales letter. At this point you just want to remind them who you are so you won’t seem like a stranger when you contact them later. Make your first contact warm and friendly, while also reminding them why they signed up in the first place.

3. Use double opt-in only

Many e-mail marketers swear by the single opt-in autoresponder, but the smart businessman knows it is double opt-in that is truly best. No one is on a double opt-in list by accident. This is because they had to verify the communication themselves. This means that your messages will most likely get through all spam filters. The worst thing that can happen if you’re making money through e-mail marketing is to get considered a spammer. Your files could get deleted, virtually putting you out of business from one day to the next. Protect yourself from the beginning with a double opt-in only.

The modern entrepreneur cannot afford to be shy when it comes to gathering email addresses. Share your expertise and do it through email. Turn leads into clients, clients into raving fans and raving fans into more money than you can spend.

Bonus: Bootstrapping Autoresponder Tip

Usually autoresponders can get quite pricey for a bootstrapping entrepreneur, but having a well built and well engaged list is invaluable.  There is a great service from MailChimp that is FREE up to 500 subscribers.  With this solution, you can send up to 3,000 emails per month and you can get an opt-in box on your page to start building your list today!

  • Auto-responders are just tools. They can bring in a lot of sales and profit, but most people do not use them the right way.

When I started my SEO company, I never used to get people to sign up for my mailing list, because I was lazy and never believed in "following up" with people. Well, once I started actively communicating with the customers, the sales have gone up by 40% (roughly).

The part which changed is: I started using an auto-responder.

    Great post!

  • I totally agree and am constantly looking for new ways to build it...any strategies would be wonderful.

Awesome tip Adam! I started putting together an online yo-yo community called www.twinepitched.com and after putting it on a break for a little while (3 months) I needed a way to make sure I could reach the site readers and members in the future, so I set up an account at MailChimp, embeded an opt-in into the site, and shared an opt-in page with all my group members, fan page fans, and some yo-yoers I know in person. Now, I only have 3 people opted in so far, but I'm really excited to at least have the ball rolling :) I figure once I get regular content flowing on the site again opt-ins will pick up, and I'll have more content to turn into email courses to bring opt-ins up even more :)

    Thanks again for the tip!
  • Mikemonty,

Yes, definitely...regular content will without a doubt help build your list and of course your consistent traffic, SEO etc. Keep us in the loop on how you progress!

  • Good post Adam! I remember when I was first getting started and didn't have the money to have an auto-responder(at least that's what I THOUGHT). I later learned the importance of them and you provide a great option to help the beginners out with MailChimp!

I do have a question for you, what type of information would you recommend giving away to build up your subscriber list? I've heard a lot of differing viewpoints on this ranging from training videos to just a simple e-book. I currently am using just a basic e-book but am thinking about creating some high quality training videos.

and lastly, in the first e-mails what type of message would you recommend? Something like "Hey, it's Chris from WhosChrisHughes.com, I'm just verifying that you wanted this information and here is the information you asked for"? Thanks!

    -Chris
  • Chris,

Thanks, glad you liked the post!
Yes, there is no specific rule as to 'what' to giveaway but I think if your site visitor is interested in what you are offering, they'll be happy with a quality e-book or a quality video. I use 'quality' twice there because there is so much 'fluff' out there online that we really need to focus on the meat 'n potatoes and less stuffing!

And with regards to your 2nd question, yes, you will need to have them double opted in so something to the effect of: 'Thanks for requesting the 'who is chris hughes' newsletter your on track for receiving some really great bonuses and tons of quality insight & content, the final step if for you to verify your email by clicking the link below and be sure to whitelist us so we stay out of your spam folder'

    Cheers!
  • Alex,

I agree 100%! As you mentioned, Exchanging value through a well written e-book is a must! I was very surprised to read in your post about the audible.com '10 days until you will be unsubscribed' I don't understand the reasoning behind the delay. Are they hoping you'll change your mind or what? As you said, this is an automated 'un-subscribe' feature that most services offer.

  • Hey Adam! This is great advice. I've been meaning to get an autoresponder for some time, but I've always convinced myself that I can't afford it. I've heard great things about Aweber.

Is there a way to import your email subscribers to an Aweber (or other) account?
  • Hi Nick!

Thanks! Yes, aweber is a popular program but my recent favorite is http://infusionsoft.com
Infusionsoft is quite a bit more robust!

    Continued Success Nick!
  • I think autoresponders can be done very well and they can be done very poorly. Exchanging value through an e-book or some other promotion is almost essential. As a consumer/potential client, i don't want the feeling that I'm being corralled like sheep. I give permission to use my email because I saw the potential value your services/information had for me. If it quickly turns into copy-laden messages right from the get-go, I'm looking for that unsubscribe button.

I recently tried unsubscribing from Audible.com and I got a message that it would be done within the next 10 business days. There is no reason that it couldn't be done instantaneously. That created a lot of negative energy from me towards the company and I had even kinda liked their concept. Me unsubscribing from them just meant I didn't want their sales copy, I didn't feel negative about them until I received the 10 business days response.
  • Alex, I didn't realize Audible took that long! I'm on their list from getting the 4 hour-work week audio I sent to you. Maybe they'll need some input from unstrappd ;-)
